The Benefits of Forgiveness: Summary of a Class Presentation

Yesterday’s class was on the benefits of forgiveness. These benefits are absolutely crucial, for they are what will motivate us to forgive. Lesson 68 says, “Perhaps you do not think you can let your grievances go. That, however, is simply a matter of motivation.” If we believe even a little that these benefits will follow, we will find forgiveness to be natural and desirable. In no particular order, here is a list of some of the main benefits of forgiveness:

  • Release from anger and bitterness
  • Release from the painful event; it no longer seems real
  • Release from the past
  • Release from guilt/forgiveness of oneself
  • Release from fear
  • Release from fear of God/seeing God as Friend
  • Release from the ego’s rule over your mind
  • Unleashing the natural impulse to love
  • Remembering who you are
  • Hope for a better future
  • Gaining power of events that seemed to have power over you
  • Seeing a world in which everyone is your dearest friend
  • Healing your body
  • Healing your brother’s mind, releasing him from guilt
  • Healing your brother’s body
  • Healing your relationships
  • Release from isolation
  • Remembering the eternal present
  • Bringing about holy encounters
  • Releasing your savior (who will then save you)
  • Seeing your brother’s true nature as the Son of God
  • True perception, Christ’s vision
  • Awakening to God

This list could be much longer, because in the final analysis, according to the Course, “Forgiveness offers everything I want” (Lesson 122). If we really thought this, would it be so hard to forgive?
