Expanded Prayers from the Workbook

Here are a number of my favorite prayers from Part II of the Workbook. I have included comments after each line of each prayer to help you in praying them. My suggestion is to read the line from the prayer and my comments after, and then close your eyes and pray that line, using the comments to guide how you say it, what meaning you give it. Then open your eyes and do the same with the next line. You may want to go through a prayer several times or just once. The point of my comments, however, is to help you savor each line and to make it a real prayer of the heart, rather than a rote experience.

“Peace to my mind. Let all my thoughts be still.”

1.Father, I come to You today to seek the peace that You alone can give.

“Father”—I am saying this directly to my Creator, my God

“today”—Monday, [fill in date]

“to seek the peace”—what could I want more than God’s peace?

“that You alone can give”—a peace that nothing in this world can give, but God can

2.I come in silence.

“I come” is repeated. What a direct statement of relationship.

“in silence”—an absence of diversions. All I am doing is coming to God.

3.In the quiet of my heart, the deep recesses of my mind, I wait and listen for Your Voice.

“the quiet of my heart, the deep recesses of my mind”—the place I go to in meditation

“I wait” expectantly

“and listen” intently for the one thing I truly want

4.My Father, speak to me today.>

“My Father”—again, notice how personal this is

“speak to me”—this is not so much a request for words as for God to speak to me His peace, His Love

5.I come to hear Your Voice in silence and in certainty and love, sure You will hear my call and answer me.

“I come” is again repeated

“in silence and in certainty and love”—dwell on each one separately

“sure You will hear my call”—focus on this confidence, this surety.

“Let me perceive no differences today.”

Father, You have one Son[the Christ, the Self we all share].

And it is he that I would look upon today [fill in date].

He is Your one creation [the only thing You ever created].

Why should I perceive a thousand forms [a thousand bodies] in what remains as one?

Why should I give this one a thousand names [John Perry, Brenda Vanderhoff, etc.,] when only one suffices?

For Your Son must bear Your Name [the Name of God], for You created Him. [Thus, we all have only one Name. You could say that “God” is everyone’s last name.]

Let me not see him [choose a particular person here] as a stranger to his Father [see this person as no stranger to God],

nor as stranger to myself [see this person as no stranger to you].

For [name] is part of me and I of him,

and we are part of You Who are our Source,

eternally united in Your Love [see this person and yourself united in God’s Love];

eternally the holy Son of God.

“How can illusions satisfy God’s Son?”

1.Father, the truth belongs to me.

Do you feel like the truth always eludes you, behind a cloud of uncertainty?

Here is the statement that the truth is yours. It belongs to you.

2.My home is set in Heaven by Your Will and mine.

Where do you consider your home to be?

Home is where you belong, so not only does the truth belong to you, you belong to Heaven.

3.Can dreams content me?

Think of some of the things of this world you thought would make you happy.

Do you think they really can?

4.Can illusions bring me happiness?

5.What but Your memory can satisfy Your Son?

If you are God’s Son, what can else can satisfy you but God?

6.I will accept no less than You have given me.

What God has given you is all of Heaven, all of Himself. Accept no less.

7.I am surrounded by Your Love, forever still, forever gentle and forever safe.

Imagine what it would feel like to be surrounded by God’s Love.

Imagine that Love being forever still…forever gentle…forever safe.

8.God’s Son must be as You created him.

God’s Son is you. This means “I, being your Son, must be as You created me.”

How could God’s Son be without His Love,

without what God has given him,

without the memory of God,

without Heaven,

without the truth?

“The hush of Heaven holds my heart today.”

1.Father, how still today!

Let me imagine a day of perfect stillness,

in which everything is resting in peace, glowing with a soft radiance.

2.How quietly do all things fall in place!

Normally, everything feels out of place, in dissaray.

But today, all things have quietly fallen into their proper place.

As I look out on the world, everything is exactly where it belongs.

3.This is the day that has been chosen as the time in which I come to understand the lesson that there is no need that I do anything.

This is the day You have appointed for me to finally realize, “I need do nothing.”

4.In You is every choice already made.

This is why I need do nothing.

In You every choice that faces me has already been made.

Let me feel myself resting in You, with all choosing behind me.

5.In You has every conflict been resolved.

I do things because I am trying to end conflict.

But in You, the conflicts that confront me are already over and done with.

6.In You is everything I hope to find already given me.

I do things to acquire the things I hope to find.

But in You, no acquiring is needed, for You have already given me everything.

7.Your peace is mine.

Your perfect freedom from choice, conflict, and seeking is given me.

Your peace must be limitless, unfathomable! Yet Your peace is mine.

8.My heart is quiet, and my mind at rest.

In Your peace, with no need to do anything, I am totally at rest, completely filled.

9.Your Love is Heaven, and Your Love is mine.

“Eternal holiness abides in me”

1.Father, my holiness is not of me.

Even though it is in me and is mine, it is not from me.

A Power beyond mine put it there.

2.It is not mine to be destroyed by sin.

That thing I did today didn’t destroy it,

didn’t even touch it.

3.It is not mine to suffer from attack.

When I did that thing to so-and-so recently,

my holiness didn’t suffer in the least.

4.Illusions can obscure it, but can not put out its radiance, nor dim its light.

All that my attacks and the attacks on me have ever done is cover it over.

Beneath their clouds it remains as bright as the sun.

5.It stands forever perfect and untouched.

It “stands”—it maintains its position.

“Perfect,” what a word! It is actually perfect.

“Untouched”—it is pristine, pure, undefiled.

6.In it are all things healed, for they remain as You created them.

Inside my holiness, all things are still in their original, pristine state.

7.And I can know my holiness.

I can know this beautiful, perfect, blazing light of holiness.

It need not remain a mere theory. I can directly experience it.

8.For Holiness Itself created me,

That is where I came from, from the purest holiness, from Holiness Itself.

and I can know my Source because it is Your Will that You be known.

In knowing my holiness I am really knowing Your Holiness. I am knowing You.

And I can know You because You will to be known by me.

“In fearlessness and love I spend today.”

1.This day, my Father, would I spend with You,

What would I day truly spent with God be like?

Be specific about “this day.” Perhaps apply it to this meditation.

as You have chosen all my days should be.

God wants all of our days to be days we spend with Him.

2.And what I will experience is not of time at all.

This is a day of silence and of trust. It is a special time of promise in your calendar of days. It is a time Heaven has set apart to shine upon, and cast a timeless light upon this day, when echoes of eternity are heard. This day is holy, for it ushers in a new experience; a different kind of feeling and awareness. You have spent long days and nights in celebrating death. Today you learn to feel the joy of life (W-157.1).

3.The joy that comes to me is not of days nor hours,

Not joy that comes from the happenings of the day, the happenings of the hour.
for it comes from Heaven to Your Son.

What would joy that comes from Heaven be like?

What would joy that was given to God’s Own Son be like?

Would it have anything to do with time?

4.This day will be Your sweet reminder to remember You,

Imagine a day sent by God to be His sweet reminder to you to remember Him?

Your gracious calling to Your holy Son,

Imagine a day that was God’s gracious calling to you, His Son?

the sign Your grace has come to me,

Imagine a day that was a sign that God’s grace had come to you.

and that it is Your Will I be set free today.

Imagine a day that was a sign that God’s Will is for you to find freedom today.

“I follow in the way appointed me.”

1.Father, Your way is what I choose today.

“Father”—address Him directly.

“Your way”-what is His way? Try to choose it as you say this.

2.Where it would lead me do I choose to go.

Where would His way lead you? To the store? To the phone?

Try to muster the willingness to go there?

3.What it would have me do I choose to do.

What would His way have you do?

Are there any tasks He wants you to do that you have been avoiding?

4.Your way is certain and the end secure.

“Your way is certain” means “it works; it gets you there.”

“The end secure” means that nothing can jeopardize the end in which you arrive home.

5.The memory of You awaits me there.

This is what all of our journey is for—the moment when we fully awaken to the awareness of God.

This is no dead memory, but a living encounter with an eternal Love.

6.And all my sorrows end in Your embrace,

Our Love has been waiting for us with open Arms.

We know that our sorrows can end in the embrace of a loved one.

How much more can they end in God’s embrace?

which you have promised to Your Son,

God has promised His embrace to us. Would He break His promise?

who thought mistakenly that he had wandered from the sure protection of Your loving Arms.

We seem to have wandered far from His Arms, from His embrace.

But in reality, we never left.

“I am forever an Effect of God.”

1.Father, I was created in Your Mind, a holy Thought that never left its home.

You thought me. I was born as an idea in Your Mind. And I am still there.

2.I am forever Your Effect, and You forever and forever are my Cause.

My identity will always be determined by You, not by me.

3.As You created me I have remained.

The purity You gave me in my creation is shining unchanged.

4.Where You established me I still abide.

How could I leave the home You established for me?

5.And all Your attributes abide in me

…Your power, Your peace, Your Love, Your joy, Your limitlessness…

Because it is Your Will to have a Son so like his Cause that Cause and Its Effect are indistinguishable.

You have no desire to be special. You want me to be all that You are.

6.Let me know that I am an Effect of God, and so I have the power to create like You.

I cannot even imagine that kind of power, yet it is mine, being your gift to me.

7.And as it is in Heaven, so on earth. 8. Your plan I follow here

As I am Your effect in Heaven, so I must follow Your plan on earth.

And at the end I know that You will gather Your effects into the tranquil Heaven of Your Love

…all of Your effects-myself, my friends, my family, all people, all living things

where earth will vanish, and all separate thoughts unite in glory as the Son of God.

As earth vanishes, all those Thoughts of Yours I thought were separate will unite in glory as one Self, Your Son.

“I can attack but my own sinlessness,

And it is only that which keeps me safe.”

1.Father, Your Son is holy.

And Your Son is me.

You are my Father, Who loves me more than any earthly father could imagine.

Your Love created me holy, and that is how I remain, no matter what I think of myself.

2.I am he on whom You smile

Your Smile is everything to me.

It is my sun, my Source of life, in which I abide.

What could be more joyous than feeling Your Smile shining on me?

in love and tenderness so dear and deep and still

Let me know the love of Your Smile, the tenderness of it.

Let me feel how dear is Your Love, how deep, how still.

the universe smiles back on You, and shares Your Holiness.

Your Holiness lies in Your loving Smile.

In smiling back on you, we share Your Holiness.

3.How pure, how safe, how holy, then, are we,

How pure are we. How safe are we. How holy are we.

Let me feel this purity, rest in this safety, shine in this holiness.

abiding in Your Smile,

Basking in Your Smile.

Living in Your Smile like flowers live in the sunlight and turn their faces toward its warmth.

with all Your Love bestowed upon us,

All of Your Love. How could that be?

Let me know the joy of feeling all of Your Love bestowed on me.
living one with You,

With no distance between Us, no space for hate or discord to arise.

Living inside the warmth of Your Smile.

in brotherhood and Fatherhood complete;

The experience of brotherhood I long for is there, in Your Smile.

The perfect Father I long for is there, in Your Smile.

in sinlessness so perfect that the Lord of Sinlessness conceives us as His Son,

Only the perfectly sinless could be the Son of the Lord of Sinlessness.

And in my perfect sinlessness, I am Your Son.

a universe of Thought completing Him.

I and my brothers are a universe of thought.

So pure, so sinless, so vast, that we actually complete You.

What more hallowed honor could there be?

“Today the peace of God envelops me,

And I forget all things except His Love.”

1.Father, I wake today with miracles correcting my perception of all things.

Imagine waking up in this way.

2.And so begins the day I share with You as I will share eternity, for time has stepped aside today.

We are sharing this day with God in the same way that we will share eternity with Him. Time is nowhere to be seen.

3.I do not seek the things of time, and so I will not look upon them.

The word “things” crops up repeatedly in this lesson, referring to the things of this world.

We do not look on them because we are focused only upon God.

4.What I seek today transcends all laws of time and things perceived in time.

The laws of time cause all things to pass away, to end.

We seek an encounter that goes beyond all things that pass away.

5.I would forget all things except Your Love.

This is what we seek today. We would forget all things here below.

We would remember only God’s Love, caught up in it, absorbed totally in it.

6.I would abide in You, and know no laws except Your law of love.

We would be wrapped within God alone.

We would forget the laws of time and remember only the law of love—have only an experience of love as the ruling power of reality.

7.And I would find the peace which You created for Your Son,

By abiding in God we would find the peace which He created just for us, His Son.

We would find ourselves enveloped in His peace.

forgetting all the foolish toys I made as I behold Your glory and my own.

We would forget the things of time which we made as our foolish playthings.

Who would want to remember such trivial things while caught up in the vision of God’s glory and our own glory?
