Healing-to-Separate

Think of someone you have tried to help or are currently trying to help, someone who seemed particularly less “together” than you. It may be helpful to think not of a single person but a class of people, perhaps people you have helped in a particular capacity.

This exercise needs great honesty. We don’t like to admit we think we are better than others, and it is not socially acceptable to voice such thoughts. Yet it is crucial to admit them to ourselves, or they will simply remain in our minds and produce hidden guilt.

Have you ever had thoughts like these about this person or these people (even somewhere in the back of your mind that you were not aware of until reading this)?

___ I know better than this person/these people
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I have been better trained
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I have more learning and understanding
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am more talented and skilled
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am wiser
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ This person’s role is to stand beneath me in patronage to me
and I am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ This person’s role is to be another body worshipping at my shrine (P-3.II.9:9)
and I am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am so much more together
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am more forgiving
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am quite a bit more mature, more advanced
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am more honest with myself
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am more spiritual
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I am more dedicated and serious
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ By comparison, I stand “tall and stately, clean and honest, pure and unsullied”
(T24.II.1:6) and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I had special achievements in the past (past lives)
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ I have “unusual attunement with the ‘unseen'” (M-25.3:6)
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

___ God (or something) has granted me a special gift that this person doesn’t have
and am therefore to some degree better, on a somewhat higher plane

If any other forms of superiority occurred to you in doing this exercise, you can write them here:

IS THE ROLE OF HELPER A HEALTHY ONE?

Is it appropriate, then, to be in a helping role at all?

In arrogance the answer must be “no.” But in humility there is indeed a place for helpers. It is like the role that helps in prayer, and lets forgiveness be what it is meant to be. You do not make yourself the bearer of the special gift that brings the healing. You but recognize your oneness with the one who calls for help. (S3.III.4:26)

In other words, your special gift is that you know that you and the other equal. You know that you and he are the same. You know that you and he are one. That is what you currently have that he doesn’t. How can this special gift–knowing that you both are on the same plane–elevate you above him?

EXERCISE IN RECOGNIZING EQUALITY AND ONENESS

Here is a collection of samenesses that the Course mentions. Hold the person you used for the previous part of this in mind and repeat each sameness in your mind, while recognizing it means that you and this person are the same in that way. Try to get a sense of that one before going on to the next.

Same nature
Same worth

Same desires

Same mistakes

Same problem

Same pain

Same interests

Same goal

SAME SELF
