By Stephanie M.
Years ago, while studying A Course in Miracles and other spiritual paths, I felt confused about the best way for my studies to continue—whether I should exclusively dedicate my time to just the Course or continue with my varied paths all at the same time.
It was late one night when I finally turned out the lights, and I decided to ask God Himself. So I did. I said, “God, which path will bring me closer to you?” And then I fell asleep.
I was at one time very afraid of elevators and getting into them. They terrified me, and many times, I opted for the stairs. Now asleep, I suddenly found myself in a nightmare. I was alone in an elevator, and it stopped! The doors wouldn’t open. I couldn’t get out. I panicked! I screamed and punched the walls repeatedly. I remember saying to myself if I would just punch every button and scream and yell, I would get out. But in my dream, that didn’t happen. I couldn’t make the elevator work, and I couldn’t get help. I was trapped.
Still in my dream, it suddenly occurred to me to pray to God. I remember thinking I never thought of that. Nothing else had worked so, I prayed. I said, “God, what is the quickest way out of this elevator?” And immediately I heard “WAKE UP!’ And I did! I woke up from my dream, and that was indeed the quickest way out.
For me, I felt this meant sticking with The Course exclusively as the quickest way home for me. A Course in Miracles is all about helping us to wake up from the illusion of this earthly experience. We wake to remember God. We wake to remember who we truly are as God created us. We wake to return to our real home in heaven. I know with the Course, I won’t get stuck as I did in my elevator dream. Jesus says I cannot fail to get to my real home. There is peace in that promise. And peace, not fear, is what I want.
…and we are home, where You would have us be. [CE T-31.IX.12:7]
