Time was suddenly swept away and filled with love on a drive I had found in the past to be tedious, monotonous, and uneventful. Not this time.
I had been studying the Course for a few years when I made a trip to another province about 800 kilometers away, where most of my relatives lived. My favorite aunt had been moved to a care home, and I felt it might be the last time I would see her. From a young age, I, along with my family, made this same trip dozens of times over the years.
On this occasion, I planned to drive down one day, visit as many relatives as possible the next, and drive home the following day. While ‘making the rounds’ of visits, I felt a strange super-awareness, as if I was observing everyone and everything in a much sharper way, for the first time. Every moment was so vivid and bursting with love. Throughout this amazing awareness, I felt I was in the constant presence of God and connected deeply in every interaction and to everything I laid my eyes upon.
When it was time to head home, I was feeling alert and strangely lighthearted despite the rather sad visit with my ailing aunt. I was driving west into a late afternoon rainstorm, and I noted the beautiful cloud formations moving in and around the sun and the many sun rays seeming to touch the earth. It was spectacularly beautiful, and I felt humbled. At one point, I stopped the car to walk around and ensure I wasn’t having some kind of medical event. This was such an ‘other worldly’ experience, it made me question if there was something physically going on with me.
All seemed well, so I continued on my journey. The sensations picked right up again. There was no sense of time or place, only immense peace, joy, and a sudden understanding of my life, why I felt the way I did growing up, and answers to questions I had about my ancestors. It felt like I had access to a much larger consciousness than my little self. I understood the order of my life and the certainty that I have always been in God’s hands. An overwhelming sense of forgiveness and healing washed over me. This was such a deeply personal experience. I continue to find it difficult to adequately express this vision because words are not enough.
When I noticed the bright city lights up ahead, indicating my approaching destination, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I realized I was home! Seven and a half hours had passed in a seeming instant!
The glow of happiness and gratitude remained with me for a few days, but started to fade. However, I think about this often and am comforted and grateful. I believe it was a beautiful lesson—a vision– that showed me I can be with God and experience the incredible lightness, healing, and love at any time.
